Thiruvalla

The town of Thiruvalla lies in Pathanamthitta District, approximately halfway between the state capital, Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum), and the port of Kochi. All of Kerala's main tourist attractions are within easy reach and, as Thiruvalla lies on a main North - South railway line, getting out and about is simple.

Long distance places like Goa, Chennai (Madras) or Bangalore can be reached on overnight sleeper trains direct from Mavelikara, making this town an ideal base for touring.

This area has a large Christian population and the town itself is quite a big local centre, very prosperous, busy and noisy. There is a lot of money in the town due to a large contingent of NRIs (Non-Resident Indians) and hence there are a number of very modern shops and department stores in the town.

The Sevika Sanghom and the volunteers' accommodation are situated in the quieter district of Manjadi, some 2km from the town centre.

Facilities available in the town include:

  • train station
  • 2 bus stations
  • a large number of banks and ATMs
  • modern supermarkets shops selling a wide range of provisions including imported goods
  • market stalls for cheap fruit and vegetables
  • newsagents selling English language newspapers and books
  • art and craft suppliers
  • cinemas
  • post offices
  • several broadband internet cafe's
  • numerous 'phone booths
  • photo processors
  • vegetarian and non-vegetarian cafe's and restaurants
  • hotels
  • a cathedral and several churches
