Mavelikara

The town of Mavelikara lies in Alapuzha (Alleppey) District, approximately halfway between the state capital, Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum), and the port of Kochi. All of Kerala's main tourist attractions are within easy reach and, as Mavelikara lies on a main North - South railway line, getting out and about is simple.

Long distance places like Goa, Chennai (Madras) or Bangalore can be reached on overnight sleeper trains direct from Mavelikara, making this town an ideal base for touring.

The town itself is small yet prosperous, busy and noisy and easy to get around, on foot, by bicycle or by the ubiquitous auto-rickshaw.

Facilities available in the town include:

  • train station
  • 2 bus stations
  • banks and ATMs
  • shops and market stalls selling a wide range of provisions
  • newsagents selling English language newspapers and books
  • art and craft suppliers
